Sanfang Qixiang

Sanfang Qixiang features a dense network of alleys, courtyard residences, ancestral halls, and public spaces. Faced with the threat of large-scale urban redevelopment, the project follows a holistic conservation plan. Buildings were surveyed and renovated by category, preserving local materials and traditional craftsmanship while integrating modern infrastructure and introducing new uses into courtyards. Research into clan history, folk customs, and commercial heritage shaped an open community museum linking dispersed heritage sites. The approach shifts conservation from the restoration of individual buildings to the protection of urban fabric, cultural memory, and everyday vitality. The project received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
