Laomendong

Laomendong is one of the oldest areas within Nanjing's historic city walls, with ancient alleys and courtyards set among deteriorated houses and aging municipal infrastructure. In this complex renewal project, conservation, architectural design, and landscape design are closely integrated. Working from the original street pattern and streetscape, historic buildings were restored and structurally sound later buildings adapted to new functions. New construction responds to the neighborhood's scale, spatial rhythm, and architectural details. Progressive renovation from courtyards to streets introduces modern amenities into the historic quarter.
